Typed Letter signed: "Eleanor Roosevelt", 1 page, 6x6¾. Val-Kill Cottage, Hyde Park, N.Y., 1955 November 25. On personal letterhead to Eames Mac Veagh, Washington, D.C. In full: "I want to thank you for your letter, which I appreciate. It was most thoughtful of you to send me a copy of the letter you have written to former President Truman. With all good wishes, Very sincerely yours". Lightly soiled at top edge. Mailing fold, not at signature. Otherwise, fine condition. Otherwise, fine condition. Anna ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (1884-1962), America's First Lady (1933-1945) and lifelong advocate for progressive causes, especially civil rights, had a relationship with President Truman which evolved from wary formality to warm friendship. The content of Mac Veagh's letter to Truman is unknown, but when this letter was written, Truman and Mrs. Roosevelt were headed for one of their few strong disagreements. Roosevelt was already backing Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson for the Democratic Presidential nomination the following year. Truman would back New York Governor Averill Harriman. Val-Kill was Eleanor Roosevelt's personal retreat. After FDR's death, she made it her principal residence. It is the only National Park Service site dedicated to a First Lady. Two items.
