Description: All three volumes are in very good condition, showing little, if any, wear in the corners or around the edges. From Wikipedia: On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the 1st edition, Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc. published a facsimile of the 1st edition, even including "age spots" on the paper. This information that was apparently included in a booklet that Britannica sent out with the original purchases. Please note that this set being sold does NOT include that booklet (though it does include annotation insert seen on the photo): "In 1979 Encyclopedia Britannica published an 'Authentic Replica' of the first edition of the Encyclopedia. This replica, or as it's commonly referred to, facsimile edition was produced using an actual first edition and a photographic reproduction process. They even simulated the stains and age on the pages." The following is advertising copy from the booklet that was originally included with the sets: "A Replica to Treasure. Your Replica of the 1768-1771 edition required three years of intensive research, exhaustive technology, and painstaking labor—the same amount of time it took Bell, Macfarquhar and Smellie to produce the original volumes. Scholars, artists, craftsmen, technicians and printers collaborated to develop special paper, devise new photographic systems, and test augmented printing procedures. Each operation was carefully regulated and repeatedly checked to assure absolute control over quality and authenticity. To achieve the original appearance of the hand-set type, the original set was taken apart page by page. Then each of the 2,659 pages was specially photographed. Other unique and highly technical processes were used to re-create the horizontal ridges or “hubbing” on the binding of each book, as well as the 160 exquisite engravings and the subtle “foxing,” light brown spots that occur naturally on the pages of old books as the result of bacterial action. Bell's engravings required special attention because of their exquisite detail. After conducting exhaustive experiments, a specialized team of graphic artists discovered a unique photographic screen developed in Germany. This special screen was used to reproduce the engravings with great accuracy."
