Description: In response to an interested Ebayer, I'm relisting this Hemingway 1st auction at a lower price. I was preparing to list this Hemingway with what I thought was just an ordinary prior owner’s name on its FFEP – Bertram Brooker. But, knowing from past oversights that some names are more important than others, I researched it. Bertram Brooker (1888-1955) was one of Canada's pioneer abstract painters as well as a visual artist, award-winning novelist, poet, screenwriter, playwright, copywriter, graphic designer, and advertising executive. Thanks to a kind accommodating bookseller in Toronto, I was able to verify the autograph – see comparison photos. This Hemingway First Ed, first state (yes, a perfect 3 on page 3), was evidently his personal copy. Note: I sold this book once. The buyer claimed that the stains on the FFEP (see photo) were actually old blood stains so he returned it. I'm not sure what they are but if they are old blood stains, chances are they were made by the prior owner – Bertrand Brooker. Of course, they might not be blood stains at all at all. Read on. Signed by Bertram Brooker on the top edge of the FFEP, with 1927 on title and CR pages (along with Scribner’s colophon) and a perfect “3” on page 3 (see photo), this is a first state, first printing, of the true First American Edition of Men Without Women (NY, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927) by Ernest Hemingway, his second book of short stories published in a limited quantity of 7600 copies and containing “The Killers” which served as the basis of Lancaster/Gardner film. The book is in near very good condition. Binding is well intact, reasonably firm (not as tight as fine) and a little shaken. Exterior is nice with light wear to corners and light wear to board surfaces. The gold title labels to front board and spine are not chipped but are slightly rubbed and faded. The top stain is uniform and a little faded. Fore edges show some age soiling but not too badly. Interior contents are very good with no errant textual marks. A few seams are slightly pulled. FFEP has a few small spots/stains beneath the autograph (see photo – not sure what they are). Top corner of half title page has a penciled1st Ed and price of $450. In a brodart cover, the dust jacket is a color copy of an original second state jacket, priced at $2.00. Appearance wise, it’s in fair condition with some hand-written numbers to the front panel, a copied chip to heel, moderate sunning to spine and some dark spots and soiling to rear panel. The opening bid is $199.99 with no reserve and an affordable Buy it Now for a first state of a Hemingway classic signed by one of his contemporaries. Buyer pays $5.50 boxed and padded media rate shipping in the USA. I don’t ship directly out of country but will use EBay’s service. Books are returnable in same condition for a full refund.
