Description: Essays Historical and Literaryby John Fiske New York: MacmillanFirst edition, 1902 Complete in two volumes. Volume 1: Scenes and Characters in American HistoryVolume 2: In Favourite Fields Volume 1 contains a small enveloped pasted onto the ffep containing a handwritten letter from Fiske, ingeniously signed with some musical notation that spells out Fiske: I have been informed that the note is an F#, which in solfeggio is assigned the syllable "fi" in English, and in German, "fis". The letter itself is written predominantly in English, but also contains random words and phrases from German, Latin, French and Italian, and maybe even a few words of Spanish. Dated August 2, 1890, in Cambridge, MA. It begins: "Chers fratello e sorella Misery: I have not a sufficient quantity of tempus at my disposal im einem long and interesting brief zu schreiben, but will merely on this occasion allude to a matter of biz, reserving wit, humour, pathos, and umbrella (as Mr Sampson Brass so felicitously observed) until a more auspicious gelegenheit." etc etc. It's unclear to whom he's writing, but presumably, hopefully, they were also multi-lingual and educated enough to pick up on references like the one to the character Sampson Brass in Charles Dickens's The Old Curiosity Shop. Both volumes have the armorial bookplate of Henry Charles Dakeyne, Esq (as determined by the motto "Strike, Dakeyne, the devil's in the hempe!") Condition: Hardcovers, no dust jacket; cover boards have minor scuffing, edge wear. Upper page edges gilt. Interiors are clean and unmarked. Bindings are secure; strained in a few places, but perfectly secure. wiki: "John Fiske (March 30, 1842 – July 4, 1901) was an American philosopher and historian. He was heavily influenced by Herbert Spencer and applied Spencer's concepts of evolution to his own writings on linguistics, philosophy, religion, and history."
