Description: Favorite Flies and Their Histories - Mary Orvis Marbury - 1955. The first reprint of Mabury's classic work. The author was the daughter of Orvis Company founder Charles Orvis and worked in the fly tying department. "This work consists of a collection of letters from numerous fishermen in thirty-eight states, geographically arranged. The letters are records of actual experiences of seasoned anglers. The author desired, above all, to assemble a body of practical information to assist fishermen 'when going to new waters'." Marbury was among the females to author American angling books and was a supporter and promoter of women fly tiers who developed many new and effective patterns in the late 1800s and on. This book inscribed to Elisha Lee, a beloved figure in New England angling circles due to his involvement in The Fly Casters Club of Boston, the Tihonet Club of Wareham, MA, the Massachusetts Audubon Society and the Atlantic Salmon Federation (both of which, he was appointed director), and the Miramichi Salmon Association, to name a few. Signed from "Hap", and although one could speculate which Hap this was, the nickname was common enough in angling circles at the time that the true identity of Hap is unknown in this case. Book in DJ with mylar wrapper over. Mylar chipped and becoming frail. DJ with some fading, edge wear, and chips, but remains VG. Browning marks adjacent to EPs from wrapper, otherwise clean and bright, with light foxing at page edge externally. Overall, book in near fine condition. The book is exactly as pictured.
