Description: FINE ANTIQUE UNIQUE COLORFUL STRAW WORK MATCH SAFE OBJECT D` ART 1800s FINE ANTIQUE UNIQUE COLORFUL STRAW WORK OBJECT D` ART FINE ANTIQUE UNIQUE COLORFUL STRAW WORK MATCH SAFE OBJECT D` ART CIRCA MID 1800’S This is an Antique, one-of-a-kind, very detailed, colorful, hand-crafted straw work match safe. This skill was first used by prisoners of war during the1793 - 1815 War between Napoleon's French Navy and the Naval forces of King George III of England. Small to medium size cases were a novelty made to sell to visitors or commissioned for retail sales by a sponsor or patron. This style of straw work continued and was adapted as a match safe after matches were invented and in general use around the mid 1800's but fell out of fashion. This piece was hand crafted by a Master Artisan who created this detailed match safe with nothing but colored pieces of straw, paper for a frame, and glue. There is what appears to be a sand glue mixture to the base for match striking. This piece would have taken days to hand create, and the tiny pieces of straw are somehow cut into hundreds of minuscule pieces and assembled in tiny multicolored geometric patterns. This piece has more color than most other similar pieces, more detail, and is in better condition than most. Overall, in remarkably fine condition for its extreme age. As expected, there are tiny areas of straw loss that are not distracting, and certainly, acceptable for an early 1800’s utilitarian object. 2 3/8" tall x 1 1/2" wide x 7/8" thick yet weighs only .5 ounces or 15 grams.
