Description: BOCCACCIO, Giovanni. Amorous Fiammetta. London: Privately Printed for the Navarre Society, 1926. Octavo. Full polished calf signed binding by A. Genova of Venice with many “wow” elements, including incredible gilt designs to front and back covers and Cosway-style windows cut through the middle with detailed pictorial golden reliefs inside. Also: leather clasps, raised bands, silk ribbon, custom slipcase, silk moire endpapers. Top edge textured gilt. This is an incredible binding in exquisite condition. The book itself: a limited edition, privately printed by the Riverside Press of Edinburgh for London’s Navarre Society, of Boccaccio’s “catalogue of all and singular passions of love and jealousy.” Some pages uncut, and unread. According to legend, Boccaccio’s prose romance (first published 1344) immortalizes his love for the daughter of King Robert of Anjou. There is no proof that a real Fiammetta ever existed, but the charm of the story continues. This edition is a revision of Bartholomew Yong’s 1587 English translation. The Navarre Society specialized in publishing classical literature and erotica. With introduction by Edward Hutton.
