Description: Up for sale is an Fine Quality Old Master European School 17th or early 18th century Oil on Tin Painting. It is wonderfully done and features a Scottish Highlander holding a musket blowing a horn (probably to announce the arrival of a friend or hunter who is on horseback) standing alongside his horse and what looks like an Scottish Deerhound dog by his side. It is framed and ready to hang with a beautiful Antique Early Wood and Gesso Gold Gilt or Painted Heavy Gallery Frame. The back of the painting appears to have the remnants of a very old paper lining and there is a number written on the top left, possibly a date of "1656". I do not know if that references the scene painted or is the actual date the painting was created. It could very well date to then since its painted on tin in the old master technique but my best guest would be very early 1700's. It is very old with really neat subject matter of armed highlanders clearly showing the Scottish Highlands in the background. There is a chance it could possibly depict Scottish Highlanders during the Jacobite Rising of 1715 or 1719 since they are armed with an Scottish Deerhound while no sheep are present. It would not be difficult to make the connection that they may be Scottish Rebel scouts communicating reconnaissance information on British positions. If this is the case it would date the painting to around 1715 or shortly thereafter. Measuring 19 1/4" x 14 3/4" total in frame with a depth of about 2", it is in good condition consistent with age wear. See photos and above details for full condition description. Rare opportunity to purchase a nicely painted very early classical original master artwork oil on tin painting, ready to hang on your wall for display. Not examined under blacklight, appears to be unsigned. Free shipping includes insurance to your door for domestic US addresses.
