This engraving is part of the set dedicated to the city of Thebes and in particular to Karnak, one of the largest and best preserved temple complexes of ancient Egypt. Construction of the complex began in the Middle Kingdom (around 2000 BC) and continued for over 2000 years. The Description of Egypt, Imperial edition (1809-1829), is a monumental work which marks the beginning of Egyptology. It includes 23 volumes, including 13 dedicated to engravings, totaling nearly 1000 plates in black and 72 in color. This publication is the result of the efforts of 167 learned members of the Commission of Sciences and Arts of the Institute of Egypt, who accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt. Their mission was to document the natural, cultural and historical wealth of modern and ancient Egypt. The Imperial edition of the Description of Egypt was produced on large formats, with a press specially designed for it. It spanned two decades, from 1809 to 1829. This edition was so popular that a second one, known as the "Panckoucke" edition, was published from 1821. Creating these engravings was a technical challenge considerable, requiring the creation of new methods and equipment for their production. This engraving is a rare and magnificent testimony to ancient Egypt, as well as one of the most ambitious publishing enterprises in French history. She significantly influenced Egyptology and sparked a passionate interest in ancient Egypt among generations of archaeologists, artists and researchers, contributing to the enduring fascination with this exceptional civilization.
