Description: This is a signed letter by George Smathers (1913-2007), who was a U.S. Senator from Florida for eighteen years, from 1951 to 1969. Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Smathers graduated from the University of Florida, where he had been the captain of both the basketball team and the track team. He was also the president of student government at UF. During World War II, he volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps, and was with Marine Light Bomber Squadron 413 for 19 months in the south Pacific. He survived a crash landing when his light bomber was damaged by enemy fire. After the war, Smathers was elected to serve two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Florida's Fourth Congressional District from 1947 to 1951. He was then electedSenator, and re-elected twice afterwards. These days Smathers may be best rememberedfor being a close friend of John F.
