FRAGMENTS D'ARCHITECTURE ANTIQUE 1897 Hector D’Espouy 2 Vols. 200 Heliogravures

Description: Up for sale is a rare and complete two volume large folio of Hector D’Espoy’s masterpiece of Ancient Greek and Roman Architecture, “Fragments d’Architecture Antique”. This work features 100 loose heliogravure plates in each volume (200 plates total), presenting a collection of drawings and engravings representing monuments and architectural details of Roman and Greek antiquity. Each plate measures 18” x 13”. The text content is in French. This monumental work was done under the direction of Professor Hector D’Espouy and a team of hand-selected students over many years. The first volume was completed and published in 1897 and the second volume eight years later in 1905. Please note that the first volume does not have a date, and the second volume is dated as mentioned above. This is D’Espouy’s scarcest work with other copies often missing many plates due to being sold off for framing or in very poor condition. PLEASE NOTE: Technically, these are not books but portfolios. The plates are all loose rather than bound-in and housed in large cloth and board cases. RESTORATION AND CONDITION: The portfolio cases were missing the hinged spines and showed moderate deterioration of the edges. The spines have been reconstructed completely, using similar board and premium archival bookbinding cloth tape as shown in photos (See Photo # 4). Also the case edges have been lined with the same cloth tape to strengthen and prevent further deterioration. The ribbons that hold the cases closed had deteriorated, so we replaced the front edge ribbons. Other that those cosmetic repairs, it is all original and the cases are now strong and sturdy! The Plates range from Very Good to Near Fine condition. Some show light edge chipping here or there and several have a very light edge stain of a couple inches. None of these minor flaws impact the images. Most images are quite unblemished and fantastic! We also noticed that a few of the plates appear to have been punctured at some time in the past, but were repaired. This is hard to detect unless you turn the plates over and see the repair. These repairs appear to have been done many years ago. Overall, the folios are visually fantastic and in the best condition of any pair we’ve seen via online research.
