Description: Hand Painted Oil on Mounted Canvas - Copy of a Circa 1819 Portrait by John Brewster, Jr. (American, 1766 - 1854) Officially titled: "Portrait of a Young Boy Holding a Red Book" it is typical of Brewster's half-portraits of children. While the image is in the public domain, I couldn't find the location of the original. Most of Brewster's many portraits were produced while he was living in Buxton, Maine, recording the faces of much of Maine's elite society of his time. This child probably came from that area. It's a small painting, but the antique frame I found for it makes it a very attractive item and is ideal for the country decor of people who prefer an original oil painting to a cheap print in a modern frame. The frame has a unique painted marbleized finish and really looks the part. The painting is new and was finished in early April, 2023. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition. Actual canvas size is: 8" x 10" Outside dimension of the frame is: 12-1/2" x 10-1/2" A little research told me the original of this painting, alongside a portrait of the boy's sister (a pair) was sold at a Sotheby's auction in 2007. Surprisingly, both were quite small, only about twice the size of my copy. Couldn't find out what they sold for, but the pre-sale estimate for the pair was $100,000. to 150,000.
