Description: This wonderful piece is a French turn-of-the-century covered candy dish made by Portieux Glass. The pattern is known as Argonaut and features a shell and dolphin / dragon motif with a shell finial and three dolphin / dragon feet. The Argonaut pattern was produced by Portieux Glass, and later by Portieux/Vallerysthal (PV). Items were made in transparent colors, including crystal/clear glass, and a variety of opaque colors. In the 1950s and 1960s, Westmoreland Glass reproduced the Argonaut pattern (sometimes referred to as Dolphin and Shell) in very similar transparent and opaque colors. Westmoreland items were usually issued with a Westmoreland label or the Westmoreland trademark. This creates some identification problems between older Portieux/Vallerysthal pieces and the reproduced Westmoreland pieces. Offered here is a genuine Portieux Argonaut candy dish and it is marked “Portieux” in the center of the bowl. It measures about 5 ¾” high (including the lid), and 5” in diameter. The condition is great. On the inside top rim there are couple nicks ( not noticeable unless you open the top and turn upside down and I will take pictures at the end for you to see close up. I noticed a couple lines / scratches on the inside bowl. This is a very scarce original item to find in crystal and a beautiful piece to display among your other pattern glass treasures.
