Description: This is a FRANCISCAN ATOMIC STARBURST BOWL in 1996 Art Gallery POSTCARD by AUDREY HELLER Starburst is a line of dinnerware produced by Franciscan Ware, which was a part of the organization called Gladding, McBean, & Co., founded in 1875. Both Franciscan Tableware and Catalina Art Pottery are made from the material called "Malinite," which was developed by the chemists of Gladding, McBean & Co., and which is covered by a number of U.S. and foreign patents. Basically, Gladding, McBean & Co. had discovered a way to make pottery less porous, so that it would last longer and resist cracking. It was of a better quality and had a built-in sales incentive. Introduction of Franciscan's Starburst Line And this brings us to the creation of the Starburst pattern in the mid-50's. With the prosperity that came after the war, consumers were ready for something new. The futuristic Atomic starry design on Franciscan Starburst fit in well with a new chrome kitchen and advanced appliances. Introduced in 1954, Starburst is a smooth, decal-pattern Atomic design, as opposed to a raised, hand-painted one. The pattern was designed by George James. Miller's Collectibles states that the Starburst pattern was only produced from 1954-1957. In 1962, Gladding, McBean & Co. sold the Franciscan Ware plant and production operation to the Lock Joint Pipe Company, who then formed the International Pipe and Ceramics Corporation, or Interpace, in 1968. I nterpace combined production of Franciscan shapes with other ceramic manufacturers they had bought. Then, in 1979, Interpace sold Franciscan Ware to Wedgewood. The California plant was shut down in 1984, and production was moved to England. Now, the remaining Franciscan patterns still in production are sold under the Johnson Brothers name. About AUDREY HELLER : My photography draws from my background as a director and lighting designer for theatre. I create mixed scale scenarios, using the disorientation that results from these surreal scenes to draw attention to the beauty and power of everyday objects and daily interactions. I encourage people to see things that they might otherwise overlook. I have very different bodies of work: Linger- taking a long look at light. These images are all single, long exposures. I move the camera with my gaze, capturing many views and blurring the boundaries of them all. The subjects are simultaneously revealed and obscured in this process, replicating the feeling of movement and breath that I experienced in the moment. Overlooked Undertakings- The fantasy of being tiny in a giant environment is universally compelling. Whether it is interpreted playfully, politically or spiritually, we have all had some experience of feeling minuscule compared to our surroundings or our challenges. I have exhibited this series since 1996, when I made my first nerve-racking public appearances on the walls of San Francisco coffee shops. Since 2000, I have been a full time artist, showing at top juried art festivals around the country, and around the world via the web, and I published my first book, “Overlooked Undertakings” in 2009. I feel passionate about creating community and building bridges between people, so when my pictures spark a conversation or evoke a shared smile I feel tremendous delight. My work has been published, collected, and commissioned internationally. I live and work in my native San Francisco Bay Area. ITEM is about 4 1/2 X 5 1/2 and in excellent condition.
