Description: Better than excellent condition. Five hundred years ago, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) not only revolutionized art but also anticipated, in his wide-ranging studies, the scientific discoveries of later epochs. The present book pays tribute to the variety scope of Leonardo's interests and at the same time offers a fresh assessment of the artistic achievement of the Renaissance genius. On the basis of letters, contracts, contemporary poetry and diary entries, Leonardo's artistic ceuvre, and in particular his painting, is interpreted in an entirely new light. upon The main text, which traces the full length of Leonardo's career, is followed by a catalogue raisonné of 34 works, which discusses all major aspects of Leonardo's surviving and lost paintings. Based the latest research, this catalogue is thereby the first to analyse the condition, technique, design process, provenance, attribution and sources of Leonardo's paintings in such depth. The numerous enlargements of small details convey the impression that we are holding in our hands the magnificent originals housed in the great collections of the world and usually accessible to only a few specialists ----------- 3 ----------- 100 VI From the Last Supper to the fall of Ludovico Sforza 1495-1499 114 VII From Mantua to Venice and back to Florence 1500-1503 134 VIII Leonardo in Florence 1504-1506: Battle paintings and "muscular rhetoric" 144 IX Between Florence and Milan 1506-1510 156 X The last years ----------- 3 ----------- Contents LEONARDO DA VINCI - LIFE AND WORK Frank Zollner 6 I The young artist in Florence 1469-1480 44 II Professional breakthrough in Florence 1480-1482 54 III A fresh start in Milan 1483-1484 72 IV Beginnings as court artist in Milan 1485-1494 90 V The artist and "science" 168 THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS Frank Zöllner 202 BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES 205 BIBLIOGRAPHY ----------- 4 ----------- Indeed, the great Leonardo remained like a child for the whole of his life in more than one way; it is said that all great men are bound to retain some infantile part. Even as an adult he continued to play, and this was another reason why he often appeared uncanny and incomprehensible to his contemporaries.
