Charles Dickens, who lived from 1812-1870, was born near PORTSMOUTH, England but his family moved to LONDON when he was two years old. "Master Humphrey's Clock" was originally a weekly periodical published in 1840-1841. Master Humphrey is a lonely man who lives in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique longcase clock by the chimney-corner. One day, he decides that he would start a little club, called Master Humphrey's Clock, where the members would read out their manuscripts to the others. The members include Master Humphrey; a deaf gentleman; Jack Redburn; retired merchant Owen Miles; and Mr. Pickwick from "The Pickwick Papers." A mirror club in the kitchen, Mr. Weller's Watch, run by Mr. Weller, has members including Humphrey's maid, the barber and Sam Weller. After Barnaby Rudge, Master Humphrey is left by himself by the chimney corner in a train of thoughts. Here, the deaf gentleman continues the narration. Later, the deaf gentleman and his friends return to Humphrey's house to find him dead. Humphrey has left money for the barber and the maid--no doubt by traces of love that they would be married. "A Child's History of England" has chapters on the reign of the Saxons, including Alfred the Great through the reign of Harold the Second, and the Norman Conquest of 1066. Chapters on The Norman, including Kings William, Henry, and the reigns of Matilda and Stephen. Other chapters are from the Plantagenets, including the reigns of Henry the Second, Richard I, Edward I, Richard II, III, and Henry the Fourth, the Fifth, the Sixth and the reign of Richard the Third. Other Chapters cover the TUDORS, from Henry the Seventh through Elizabeth the First. The STUARTS are covered from James the First who is described as "ugly, awkward, and shuffling both in mind and person. His tongue was much too large for his mouth, his legs were much too weak for his body, and his dull goggle-eyes stared and rolled like an idiot's. He was cunning, covetous, wasteful, idle, drunken, greedy, dirty, cowardly, a great swearer, and the most conceited man on earth. . .His majesty was the worst rider ever seen, and thought himself the best." The history concludes with the Glorious Revolution when James II was forced to abdicate to France and the selection of William and Mary to rule England. 563 pages--a RARE book.
