ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Mega-Ultra-Rare Antique 1913 German Chromolithograph Depicting a Stunning View of the World-Famous French High Gothic Architectural Marvel Featuring The Beautiful 13th Century Roman Catholic Cathedral in Reims, France in All Its Mighty Grandeur, titled in German, “Reims: Cathédrale.” (Translates: “Reims: Cathedral” AKA “The Cathedral of Notre-Dame at Reims” France), after the original 1912 illustration by the famous listed architectural & landscape painter, ‘Fritz Beckert’ (German, 1877-1962), whose printed signature & date, ‘Fritz Beckert 1912.’, appears lower-right in the image corner. You can read the brief history of the Cathedral below Brief History of the Cathedral: Notre-Dame de Reims: Meaning “Our Lady of Reims” (known in English as Reims Cathedral), is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the French city of the same name. The cathedral was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was the traditional location for the coronation of the kings of France. The cathedral church is thought to have been founded by the bishop Nicasius in the early 5th century. Clovis was baptized a Christian here by Saint Remigius, the bishop of Reims, about a century later. He was the first Frankish king to receive this sacrament. Construction of the present Reims Cathedral began in the 13th century and concluded in the 14th century. A prominent example of High Gothic architecture, it was built to replace an earlier church destroyed by fire in 1210. Although little damaged during the French Revolution, the present cathedral saw extensive restoration in the 19th century. It was severely damaged during World War I and the church was again restored in the 20th century. Since the 1905 law on the separation of church and state, the cathedral has been owned by the French state, while the Catholic church has an agreement for its exclusive use. The French state pays for its restoration and upkeep. The cathedral, a major tourist destination, receives about one million visitors annually. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. (Source: Wikipedia) Publisher, Printer & Chromolitho Info: The publisher name & location, ‘VERLAG von B.G. Teubner in Leipzig’ (Translates: Publishing House of B.G. Teubner in Leipzig), appears printed upper-middle in the top outer margin area just above the image; The decoration type, ‘Künstlerischer Wanderschmuck.’ (Translates: Artistic Wall Decoration) appears printed upper-left and the lithographic info & inventory number, ‘Deutsche Künstler-Steinzeichnungen Nr. 130’ (Translates: German Artist Stone Drawings Nr. 130.), appears printed upper-right respectively. The artist’s name & title in German, ‘Fr. Beckert. Reims: Cathédrale.’, appears printed lower-middle; The teaching info appears in French & English, bottom-left & bottom-right respectively as, ‘Tableaux pour l’enseignement des langues modernes.’ and ‘Pictures for Teaching Foreign Languages.’ The Printer’s name & location, ‘DRUCK von den Dresdner Graph. Werkstätten.’ (PRINTED by the Dresden Graph. [Graphische=Graphics] Workshops.) , appears printed lower-right respectively. The publisher’s Trademark shield logo (crest with BG back-to-back [B backwards] on either side of the larger T inside a shield), appears printed lower-right in the image corner just above the artist’s printed signature. The Chromolitho in 1912 was selling for 5 Marks, which I think equaled about $1.20 USD back-in-the-day, which equals about $41.47 in today’s dollar for 2023—certainly not a cheap print back then—and in 1913, there was an advertising mention of B.G. Teubner’s new architectural lithographs from Fritz Beckert that included six scenes: “Reims: Cathédrale”, “Champs Elysees”, “Versailles”, “Avenue de L’Opera”, “Notre-Dame” and “Le Mont St. Michel”. The Chromolitho is on a nice heavier-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock and you can still see the printing registration pinholes in the upper left & right outer margin corners—used to keep the paper straight (registered) on the lithographic stones for each color pass. Size & Condition: The size with small margins is 31-1/8” x 23-15/16”, Image size is 29-7/16” x 22-1/16”. The Chromolitho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade at all on this wonderful piece—wonderful rich color & tones! This Chromolitho has been in a drawer amongst other prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time…It’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition, simply stunning & will look beautiful all framed-up! No Tears! Ultra-minimal (maybe a handful or so) of extremely slight, tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are negligible & barely noticeable in the small outer margin areas if you really, really hunt for them amidst some various colored printing ink-offset specks here & there too (none noticeable in image area) and they aren’t even worth mentioning as they are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Very minimal & very slight small crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t even noticeable (except very lightly from behind) and aren’t worth mentioning either. Other extremely minimal & very slight creasing scattered here & there in the outer margin areas and a couple outer margin corners—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since they can easily be matted & framed out. Negligible/no significant toning of the paper stock from age noticeable, especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This rare chromolitho has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. What a beauty! EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!
