Description: GRACIELA RODO BOULANGER (1933- ) ABOUT THE ARTIST: Among the most widely known artists to come from the Latin American art movement, the recurring theme of Graciela Rodo Boulanger's compositions is the innocence and simplicity of children exuberant in their joyous playful worlds of fantasy, performance and exploration. Her unique depictions of her subjects have become her calling card. Inspired by her Bolivian roots, her highly stylized approach and sensibilities as an experimenter and colorist has won her acclaim as a respected and prolific Latin American artist. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America. The works of Graciela Rodo Boulanger are often centered in the universal joy and vibrancy found in the faces of children. Her deep love of music, movement and color come together in this portfolio series of seven original lithographs, “Les Petits Rats.” Les Petits Rats are the group of very young dancers who are associated with “L’Opera” in Paris. Her daughter Sandra was a petit rat, so the artist was personally motivated to portray this subject. Dancers have been an inexhaustible resource for artists throughout history, and the seven original lithographs contained in the box portfolio (Le Petit Rat, Entracte, Pas de Quarte, Revence, En Troisieme, Apres La Dance and Touts Sur Scene) make up a suite of ballet-inspired artwork in Boulanger’s unmistakable style. The series conveys the beauty of gesture and movement in dance, and the unique relationship between the performers. We can see the closeness of these dancers; that they take comfort and confide in one another. John Ciardi described the interaction between Boulanger’s children as a “language of love,” and you can truly observe that in “Les Petits Rats.” The relationship between these ballerinas is highlighted by her use of color in this series. The juxtaposition of bold pops of color against the monochromatic background allows us to take our time finding the other hidden hues. The pastel pinks of pointe shoes and blue and yellow tints on tutus are so delicate you could mistake these works for watercolors, which only further solidify Boulanger as a master of lithography and color. Lublin Graphics,Inc. has had the distinction of publishing Boulanger's work in etching and lithography over a period of 25 years.
