Months of planning had ensured the success of the landings which occurred that Tuesday. Unfortunately, plans for expanding the beachhead were vague and failed to account for the difficulty of advancing through the hedgerowed countryside. Seven weeks of heavy fighting followed, wherein Allied territorial gains were demoralizingly low in comparison to casualties suffered. But then, on 25 July, an American attack, code-named "Cobra" and heralded by the carpet bombing support of 2500 planes, smashed through the German frontline. Suddenly the roads were open for the US 3rd Army, and Patton swiftly kicked his troops west into Brittany, south to the Lorire and east to the Seine. By 20 August most of the German 5th Panzer and 7th Armies had been surrounded and destroyed. The Normandy Campaign is a two-player game on the fighting which took place in Normandy after D-Day, covering pieces represent the divisions, brigades, and regiments of armor, airborne, and infantry which participated in the campaign.
