Description: This is a rare March 23rd, 1924 program (playbill) from the Post-Broadway engagement of the Fifth Annual Edition of the musical revue "GEORGE WHITE'S SCANDALS" (Edition De Luxe) at the Colonial Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. (The Fifth Edition opened June 18th, 1923 at the Globe Theatre in New York City and ran for 168 performances before going on the road.) ..... This series of musical revues, produced by White from 1919 through 1939, were given to elaborate show numbers much like the "Ziegfeld Follies", but were less ornate and cumbersome. Their comedy tended to be far more topical and, because White had been a dancer, the productions were fast paced and featured better choreography and music than similar revues. The musical score for the fifth edition of the "Scandals" was written by GEORGE GERSHWIN ..... The cast included WINNIE LIGHTNER, MILDRED KLAW, CLEONE STAMM, OLIVE VAUGHN, MISCHA VOL JANIN, DONALD McBRIDE, NEWTON ALEXANDER, JAMES MILLER, LESTER ALLEN, THEA LIGHTNER, RICHARD BOLD, HARRY LANG, HELEN HUDSON, the TIP TOP FOUR, TOM PATRICOLA, MYRA CULLEN, HARRY R. WEBSTER, LLOYD HALICEY, KAY OLIVER, SARAH STURM, BEE SAVAGE, NORMA CLOOS, DORIS GEORGE, PHILIS GEORGE, AILENE BELMONT, GEORGIA LERCH, HAZEL DONNELLY, DOLLY OLIVE, CATHERINE CHAPMAN, DOROTHY FENRON, MARGARET GOLLIS, JOCELYN LEE, RAY OLIVER, ROSEMARY MARSTON, ALICE WEAVER, ALICE WILKIE, the LONDON PALACE GIRLS and the GEORGE WHITE SCANDAL BEAUTIES ..... CREDITS: Music by GEORGE GERSHWIN ("Girl Crazy", "Lady, Be Good!", "Oh, Kay!", "Funny Face", "Rosalie", "Of Thee I Sing", "Porgy and Bess", "George White's Scandals"); Book by WILLIAM K. WELLS and GEORGE WHITE; Lyrics by B. G. DeSYLVA and E. RAY GOETZ; Additional Lyrics by BALLARD McDONALD; Scenes designed by H. ROBERT LAW STUDIOS; Costumes designed by SCHNEIDER-ANDERSON from designs by CORA McGEACHY; Additional Costumes designed by ERTE; Conceived, Produced and Directed by GEORGE WHITE .....
