GEORGE MASSO Jazz Trombonist signed photo in the recording studio

Description: Autographed original 8” x 10” matte, double-weight Al White photograph of the jazz trombonist, vibraphonist, arranger, composer and educator in a recording session. The image is dedicated to the photographer. Masso (1926- ) was one of the few jazz musicians with an academic education and he used it for many years as a music educator at both the high school and college level. He studied trombone as a youth in Rhode Island and rose to the point that he was able to play in his Father, Tommy Masso’s dance orchestra. He attended LaSalle Academy in Providence and upon graduation signed up for the Jimmy Palmer Orchestra. He was drafted into the War and played in the 314th Army Special Services Band in Wiesbaden. The band was not just a band, but an orchestra with a complete compliment of strings and Masso became the band’s arranger. The band’s librarian interestingly enough was Antonio Benedetto, better known today as Tony Bennett. They became life long friends. He returned in 1948 and was immediately hired by Jimmy Dorsey to play in his orchestra as a trombonist and he toured with them for a year. From 1949-1950 he was in New York City playing with the Latin Quarter Orchestra. He quit performing at the end of 1950 and went back to school and earned a bachelors and masters of music at Boston University studying with the BSO’s John Coffey bass trombonist through the GI Bill. (Bachelors in 1953, Master’s in 1959) While in school, Masso played in his Father’s orchestra. Coffey convinced him to try music education. Masso then taught music in Cranston public schools in Rhode Island and later at the University of Connecticut until 1973. (He also performed in his Father’s orchestra through many of these years as well.) Trumpeter Bobby Hackett talked him out of retirement in 1973 with a week long gig in North Carolina. He quit his professorship at UC, moved to New York City and joined the Benny Goodman Sextet (1973-1976). He also played on tour with Bobby Hackett and as a member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band from 1975-1976 and then on and off through the 1980's. He recorded with Goodman, Warren Vache Sr., Woody Herman, Peggy Lee, Bucky Pizarrelli, Charlie Ventura, Butch Miles, Maxine Sullivan and others. He also appeared as a soloist in several Woody Allen films, “Bullets over Broadway” and “Crimes and Misdemeanors”. Masso has also released over a dozen recordings as either soloist, or as band leader. For years he toured and played in jazz festivals in the U.S. and Europe. He's also a composer and arranger of classical music. He retired as a trombonist in 2012. Rare autograph and unusual to find a signed photograph of a recording session. Will combine shipments, payment however, must be made at the close of the auction and you must advise us you intend to purchase additional items. Thank you!
