ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Ultra-Rare Antique c.1920’s ‘Medium-Large Format’ Color Collotype Lithographic Inspirational/Religious Print Depicting Mother Mary, Infant Jesus and the Young St. John The Baptist, titled, “The Virgin with Jesus and St. John” (Detail), after the original c.1630-35 oil on canvas painting by the well-known listed Caravaggisti & Baroque painter, art dealer and art collector, ‘Gerard Seghers’ (AKA Gerhard, Flemish, 1591-1651), whose original painting is in the permanent collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria, and the scene is a detail of just the figures from his larger painting. Copyright, Publisher & Print Info: The publisher info & location, ‘Kunstanstalt Stengel & Co, G.M.B.H. Dresden.’, appears printed lower-right in the outer margin corner area; The title in four languages along with the inventory number & printing location, ‘The Virgin with Jesus and St. John, Maria Mit Dem Kinde Und Johannes, La Virgen Con El Niño Jesús Y San Juan, La Vièrge Avec Jésus Et St. Jean, 81089, Printed in Germany’ , appears printed lower-middle; and the artist’s name, ‘Gerhard Seghers Pinx’, appears printed lower-left respectively. The publisher’s Trademark Logo, a stylized oval in script around their name inside, ‘Stengel’, appears printed lower-left in the image corner. The Print is on a nice medium-heavier weight smooth ivory-colored wove paper stock and what’s neat is that you can still see the printing registration pinholes in the top outer margin corners (used to keep paper straight & ink layers aligned on press for each litho stone color). You can read a brief publisher bio below. Size & Condition: The size with margins is 31-7/8” x 24-3/4”, Image size is 26-5/16” x 21-5/8”. The Collotype is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade—beautiful rich colors & tones. This Collotype has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. No real or significant damage at all on this gorgeous litho with the small & negligible exceptions of: There are seven ultra-tiny & completely negligible tears in the right outer margin edge (most less than 1/4”) and one 3/8” on the bottom outer margin edge middle-right, and all are all repaired from behind with archival tape for protection, and are negligible and not even really worth mentioning since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out; Ultra-minimal (only a handful or so) of extremely tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are barely even noticeable in the outer margin areas (if you really hunt for them) and aren’t even worth mentioning either (none noticeable in the image area); Extremely minimal very small & very slight crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area which are only lightly noticeable really from the back and aren’t worth mentioning either; Other minimal & slight small creases scattered here & there in the outer margins, along a couple outer margin edges with some more-pronounced creasing along the right outer margin edge, as well as in the outer margin corners with associated dog-ear bends and some outer margin edge-wear with some dents & dings here & there—any & all outer margin issues are completely negligible since they can easily be matted & framed out; Minimal/negligible toning of the stock from age, which isn’t that noticeable especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This beautiful antique collotype has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. Publisher Brief Bio: Kunstanstalt Stengel & Co., G.m.b.H Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, London & United States (German Printers & Publishers, 1885-1945) were one of Germany’s biggest publishers, printers and exporters of beautifully printed high-quality picture postcards/art cards (depicting famous European paintings) worldwide view cards, portrait prints and art reproductions in collotype, chromolithography and later halftone offset printing. The company was originally called Stengel & Markert and was founded in 1885 in Dresden, Germany by Emil Stengel and Heinrich Markert after they bought the collotype printing studio of Scherer & Engler. Around 1889, Markert left to start his own printing business and the company became known as Stengel & Co., and by that time they were producing around 6,000 postcards a day, most of which were offered in series. Stengel & Co. were known for their high-quality collotype print process that they used for their picture postcards and art reproductions, while their chromolithographs often employed more than twenty litho-stones to achieve subtle colors and are possibly the finest examples of high printing quality to be found on any postcard. The company eventually opened an office in Berlin in 1899 and a larger factory for collotype and halftone printing in 1901, the same year they also opened a London office. The firm became a limited public company in 1906 shortly after the death of Emil Stengel. In the first decade of the 20th century, they became the largest postcard manufacturer in the world and around 1909, Joseph Keller became manager of Stengel & Co., with the Keller family who were majority shareholders. Around 1910, Stengel & Co., opened a U.S branch in New York due to the current tariffs on German imports at the time. Even with the tariffs, German printed postcards were still less expensive than domestically printed cards. Stengel’s cards were distributed by Misch & Company in Great Britain and also by the Rotograph Company in the United States from whom they took over their production of art cards. Stengel’s view-cards were printed in B&W, as well as hand-colored or were artist drawn and printed in fine continuous tone lithography, but they are only made with a simple RGB pallet. Despite these color limitations the artistry in blending the limited number of hues is handled with such skill to give the illusion of a broader pallet. The company, which existed until 1945, also printed and bound books as well as later produced printed cardboard boxes, folding boxes and outer boxes, including for the toothpaste brand Chlorodont. EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
