This is made abundantly clear by an examination of the book under review. Labanotation (or Kinetography Laban, as it is known in Europe), an international system for notating dance in a way similar to music notation, has been available since 1928. The author knows, however, that if she uses this system her work will only be read by the very few dance literati. In contrast to the study of phonetics, kinetic notation has not been considered of sufficient importance to be studied by many ethnographers. Thus, the only alternative is a nontechnical description as tedious for the writer as for the reader. A detailed comprehensive description of the music and dance of the Tewa Pueblo was a monumental undertaking. The skill of the author can be the only explanation of the fact that Kurath manages to hold her audience by following the established practice of dance ethnology today-a practice, one might add, established by Kurath (the mother of dance ethnology) herself. Kurath’s technique, evolved in over twenty years of research on American Indian dance, is to place the dance into its ceremonial context and to describe the cultural symbolism as reflected in choreographic patterns. This she does with considerable success in Part I, “Ceremonial Ecology,” and Part 111, “Symbolic Pageantry.” Kurath tells us, for example, that Corn, the traditional life staple, appears throughout Tewa dance, song, and ornament. Corn maidens symbolize the six directions as well as corn colors. Their mythological prestige is of long standing, especially the power for life sustainment of Yellow and Blue corn maidens. , . These are examples of the relationships between dances and natural environment. It is not a static relationship. The evershifting patterns of the dances and the changing rhythms of the songs reflect the shifting lights and shadows cast by clouds and sunlight on the landscape, the restless course of the river, the motion of animals and birds, and the growth of plants Part 11, “Choreographic and Musical Patterns,” describes the circuit patterns and paths of the dancers and singers on the plazas, the ground plans of the dancers, and body movement in vertical and horizontal dimensions. One might summarize Kurath by saying that the dancers form symbolic visual, rhythmic designs on the plazas. These designs vary from dance to dance and from pueblo to pueblo, but their combinations and symbolism make them unmistakably Tewa. Ground plans, postures, and costumes are presented in numerous diagrams and illustrations which serve to orient the reader visually and enable him to understand the sometimes-complex descriptions. In addition, the book is a dictionary of Tewa dances. Unfortunately, there is no index, but even without it, one can find all the Tewa dance types, tell how the dances differ from one pueblo to another, what music and costumes accompany each, when they are performed, and what their functions are. With its direct descriptive style, the book will particularly appeal to the nondance specialist and no doubt future generations of Tewa will find it indispensable in its careful recording of all aspects of the dance. It should also be useful to comparative ethnographers in its wealth of information on similarities and differences in a specific cultural complex within a circumscribed area.
