Description: Original artifacts excavated on the Civil War battlefields around Fredericksburg, Virginia. They would have been the same type equipment and arms carried at Gettysburg. At center is the remains of a harmonica; one of the personal items carried by soldiers. A Federal issue “Eagle” button and a flat button that would have been issued with a Confederate uniform are at top. The other artifacts, grommets for their oilcloth blanket, haversack buckle and rifle sling adjuster were used by both sides. The lead bullets which have oxidized in the ground are a three ring Federal issue .58 for the Springfield rifle and a Confederate issue .58 Gardner round made at the Richmond Arsenal in Virginia. The scene was reproduced from a photograph taken by Mathew Brady. His Gettysburg series, taken around July 15, 1863, were the first to include the Culp’s Hill area. The most famous Culp’s Hill photograph shows two of Brady’s assistants seated on some rocks near Union fortifications. The area where the photograph was taken is between the monuments to the 78th/102nd New York and the 150th New York Infantry Regiments. One of the trees in the photograph is still standing, and one fell over within the last ten years. At the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, Major General George Meade's “Army of the Potomac” defeated attacks by General Robert E. Lee's “Army of Northern Virginia”, halting Lee's invasion of the North and forcing his retreat. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point, due to the Union's decisive victory. The battle was fought July 1st through July 3rd, 1863. The artifacts come with an 8” x 12” riker mount box as shown. We are packing the artifacts separately so they don’t scratch the glass. The black felt behind the artifacts in the picture is over soft cotton batting which allows the relic to settle into it and allows for the different thicknesses. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid. You can place the relics however you like. Copies of the paperwork shown will come with the certificate. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
