Grady Hatton (1922 - 2013) was what some people call a BASEBALL LIFER. He was nicknamed "Grade-A" for his great DEDICATION and personal INTEGRITY. If not for 2 years in the military and 4 years at the University of Texas at Austin, Hatton's career as a player, manager, scout and front office executive would have exceeded a half century. Having come right into the majors from the military without any minor league training or seasoning, Hatton debuted for the Cincinnati Reds in April 1946 and promptly went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs in his very first game. However, while he was a solid infielder, he would be (and was) the first to tell you, "I was an average ballplayer. I could do a lot of things pretty good but wasn't outstanding in any phase of the game." He got his first taste of the minors in 1957, and the following year became player/manager for a Double-A club - the start of his managerial career. Later he JOINED UP WITH THE EXPANSION HOUSTON COLT .45s of the National League (who eventually became the "ASTROS") and became an IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTOR to the early years of the Astros, including the MANAGER for a period. Afterwards he remained a scout with the Astros from 1968-72, and a major league coach after that. He was STILL ACTIVE in baseball in the LATE 1980s as a scout for the San Francisco Giants when he finally RETIRED IN 1991, 46 YEARS after he started.
