" Attention all Grateful Dead Fans, Purists & Live Music Lovers : If Dick's Pick's Volume Nineteen ( 19 ) still isn't in your music collection, it really-really ... needs to be. To my ear, this is one of the best G.D. releases - and whenever I want to hear G.D. " Perfection ", this is one of the many ' Go-To's ' for me. And Why ? Because it's in ' That-Era ' - what I personally like to call the " Golden-Era " for the Band. This performance falls into the category of flawless & perfect, like many of the shows the Dead delivered during the groundbreaking Fall / Winter '73 Tour -- but on certain nights ( & certain songs ) the Band begins to truly master ( and really ' invent ', actually ) the skill-set to take the crowd to the deep-deep depths of outer-space ! Basically, all the way - to the moon !! Us die-hard ' analog-ers ' always used to ( and still do ) love to be finicky about our tape-flips - but this 3-CD always makes me laugh & here's why : You listen to a highly-enjoyable & air-tight 1st set performance on Disc 1 with really nice versions of L.L.Rain - T.L.E.O. - and Row Jimmy ! - but then Disc 1 ends without the Playin' closer ??! So pop in Disc 2 ( like any good Deadhead would ), and WHAM !!! You get completely Annihilated ! with a Blistering-Hot !! ' Playin' In The Band ' that drops your jaw. Wow !!?! This is big stuff, really big-big stuff. I mean credit to the whole Band, but in a one-Drummer format like this, Garcia just simply shreds the lead-lines and demonstrates complete control of the one-of-a-kind sounding Colorsound wah pedal. He absolutely kills it. Then Set 2 starts immediately ( with no tape flip even required ... Ha ! ), and the China > Rider gives your speakers yet another hard run for their money. And not to over-spoil the stew for you, but here's just a word description of how Disc 3 kicks-off : Darkstar > Mind Left Body Jam > Morning Dew !!! Yeah, and how-about that ? I know a lot of folks feel '72 was THE Peak of this pre-hiatus era for the Band ( and the recent Complete Europe '72 release adequately backs this claim ), but I think by the time Fall / Winter '73 Tour arrives ( the post " Wake " sessions ) there is a musical-growth & the musicians really mature as a cohesive unit. Ultra-clean & adhesive - that's what late-'73 means to me. 1973 undoubtedly offers some of the greatest song transitions ( segues ) ever in Rock n' Roll history, and taking those kind of chances live takes the utmost in mental self-confidence, complete control of what your instrument does, and full-belief in all of the other members in the Band.
