A REMARKABLE GRAYSON COUNTY STORY AND AN AMAZING WESTERN AMERICAN ENDING PICTURES UNDER SHERMAN AND FT. SHERMAN, TEXAS history of Sheriff W. C. (Bill) Everheart of Grayson County in 1870 era. (Grayson County records show that W. C. Bill Everheart was elected sheriff in 1878 and re-elected in 1880. This story happened when he was a deputy while Sherman was under the carpetbaggers. The picture shows the county seat of Sherman and the time that artillery troops moving west on Houston Street moved in. As many of you know, I search for old western American items that have been seldom seen and rarely read. This story is entitled, "A Stranger Rode With The Posse" by Fred M. Truett with illustrations by Al Martin Napolentano. It seems that Sheriff Everheart received a tip that a gang of outlaws known as The Baxter Gang was hiding out at Ol Man Fosters cabin bout ten miles west of Preston Bend. He rounded up a posse and went after 'em. There was one thing unusual, there was a young man who asked to join the posse. The sheriff refused but others in the posse prevailed on the sheriff so the youngster was allowed to join them. What he did, who he was and how he survived is the Rest of the Story. You will not believe. It is a piece of Sherman and Western History that I never heard of, much less read about. Well, space will not permit me to write the rest of the story but you will want to have this as your very own. It is yellowed, but the cover retains its vibrant color as it appeared many years ago in an old hard to find western magazine. GENEALOGY NAMED HEREIN INDEXED W * indicating pictured: EVERHEART, W. C.
