In 1974 Harold Howard of Lynchburg, Virginia became determined to publish a history of every Virginia regiment (infantry, artillery and cavalry) that served Virginia in the War Between the States. He named the series: "The Virginia Regimental Histories Series.” His first book was published in 1982 and the last was published in 2004. More than 200 different books were published with the imprint “H. E. Howard, Inc., Lynchburg, Virginia.” Most, if not all, were printed by J. P. Bell of Lynchburg, Virginia. Each volume of the regimental series contains a detailed unit history—often with photographs and battle maps as well as an annotated alphabetical biographical muster roll listing every soldier known to have served with the unit. Each volume is hardbound in grey cloth with the seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia on the cover. First editions limited to 1,000 are very collectable as they are signed (without personalization—just a signature) on a generic dedication page by the author. First editions with a white dust jacket with gold printing are especially prized as only subscribers who had pre-ordered or placed a blanket order for all books received them. These are becoming harder and harder to find in good condition. Mr. Howard also published very special books commemorating individual battles, campaigns and events. These were published with a blue cloth hardback cover. The series was called “The Virginia Civil War Battles and Leaders Series.” Collecting as many of the H. E.
