Four volumes in two books. An early printing ca. 1880 nicely bound in half leather and lavishly decorated in gilt with marbled paper boards, page edges and endpapers. Part of Warne's 'Chandos Classics' Series featuring 52 illustrations by William Harvey. The books were designed to be read in half-hour chunks over the course of a year, with each chapter containing an excerpt from a famous work by Jane Austen, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Cowper, Wordsmith, Defoe, Swift, Keats and many more. Condition: 8vo. Vols.1-2 557 pages with index / Volume 3-4 543 pages with index of authors. Foxing and toning to a few pages. Edges worn, leather rubbed and worn and cracked at the joints, corners bumped, leather chipped at the spine ends. A Sept. 5, 1880, gift inscription in pen on the front blank preliminary of each book. Overall, a quite desirable set, clean internally with a solid binding.
