Description: Up for sale is a copy of "Hands Around [Reigen] A Cycle of Ten Dialogues" by Arthur Schnitzler. Completely Rendered Into English - Authorized Translation. Privately Printed for Subscribers in New York. 1920 1st American Limited Edition. "Of this edition, intended for private circulation only, 1475 copies have been printed, after which the type has been distributed. This copy is number 219. "Hands Around" is a cycle of ten dialogues, each of which is linked to the previous and following dialogue through one of the speakers. "The Girl of the Streets and the Soldier" is followed by "The Soldier and the Parlor-Maid", which is in turn followed by "The Parlor-Maid and the Young Man", etc. The couple in each dialogue is about to have, or has just had, a sexual encounter. Throughout this book, Schnitzler paints a rather bleak portrait of human nature. His character's disturbing inner lives are ironically complemented by surroundings that are either sadly shabby or elegantly decadent. Overall, "Hands Around" is a fascinating work of European theater. Overall the book is in Fair Condition. There is no jacket, just a plastic overlay. The jacket is not price clipped. The boards show heavy wear and staining, as well as, some chipping and scuffing along the edges. The spine is loose and the internal webbing is showing through in the front of the book. There is wear and browning to the pages, as well as a few stains. Irregularly cut paper. There are some pencil notes on the rear and front end pages by a previous owner. Other dings here and there.
