Description: Amazing and wonderful Vintage One-of-a-Kind Journal Diary by a gentleman we believe was named Hugh McDonagh from Ireland possibly County Galway written in 1847 approx. 150 pgs. of Thomas Moore works and possibly other writers authors. What appears to have occurred is Hugh purchased a blank journal and lined it himself and beautifully and meticulously copied numerous Thomas Moore pieces (poems, songs) including Through The Last Glimpse of Erin, The Minstrel Boy, The Young May Moon, Oh Blame Not The Bard, The Farewell To My Harp, The Time I've Lost The Wooing and MANY more. In back are a couple of pages handwritten sheet music The Minstrel Boy and on several pages are personal notations including his name and a date of 1847 and several 'may God have mercy' references including one for Dines McDonagh with a date of his passing noted at 1836. He notes his town or village but to us it is illegible (see pic). However, people familiar with Ireland may immediately recognize it. He also mentions a Maryann Martin of Galway and specific village (illegible). There are additional personal notations in back including date Hugh purchased the book in December ____ (page piece missing). But again, we feel confident 1847 from other notation possibly a bit earlier. Initially we thought the journal may have been written by Moore himself as Hugh does a nice job signing Moore's name at end of some of the works. Measures approx. 6 x 7" with writing on both sides of pages. The twine spine is still holding but the cover is gone with only a remnant barely attached along spine. Back page is torn and there is significant wear due to extensive age throughout. But it is holding together well though handle with extreme care. We are reluctant to handle it extensively and our page count may be slightly off either way. Pages have tanning and creasing and small tears and staining and you name it. We cannot emphasize enough the condition is old and fragile and as a result is NON-RETURNABLE. Therefore, please ask as many questions as you would like we will do our best to answer. Zoom in on pics as part of description. We tried researching Hugh no luck though last name spelling may help a bit if digging deeper and the journal may turn up additional info we have missed. It is a treasure of Irish history and museum-worthy piece in our opinion. And if you're a Thomas Moore fan this is an absolute must have. This ships fast and FREE within U.S. Signature Required. Outside U.S. additional fees may apply which we do not control nor see. Again, please contact us any questions and please follow our store as we bring the rare things.
