Through him we see the tale of Hannibal's life unfold. Mary Dolan tells the story well, and it is evident from the way she writes that she is familiar with all the original source materials on Hannibal's life.When I first read the book, I gave no thought to who the author was. I needed only to know about Hannibal. But now that I am older, I wonder who Mary Dolan was. Was she a classics scholar? How did she come to write this book?I first found Mary Dolan's book, "Hannibal of Carthage" in the Grand Prairie Memorial Library in 1974. When I was writing Vacuum County , I remembered a crucial detail about Hannibal's tactics that I had first learned of while reading this book. I went back to the library, but they had unshelved and de-catalogued the book, and it was no longer available. Much later, in the new millennium, I was able to purchase a secondhand copy.Only a handful of books that we read in childhood leave a lasting impression on us.
