Hansatsu - Edo Period Japan - Bitchū Province (1850-60s) Tsudera Hatamoto *092

Description: This listing is for one Tokugawa era [1603 - 1868] Hansatsu (藩札) bill, worth 3 Fun of silver, issued circa 1850-60s in the Bitchū Province (modern-day Okayama Prefecture), by the Tsudera hatamoto family. Size: 4,2 cm x 15,6 cm -----During the Tokugawa shogunate, in addition to the coins minted by the Shogun, feudal lords issued an early kind of banknote called bill or scrip (hansatsu in Japanese) to be used within their domains. These usually had a face value in silver coinage (more rarely in gold and copper) or was marked for exchange for commodities such as rice. After the Meiji restoration, the han system of feudal domains was abolished but the Emperor allowed for all Hansatsu to be exchanged for the new national currency up until 1879. Please check the pictures to see the condition of the note for yourself, sold as is. Before having any ideas about attempting to clean them, please do your research. What you do you cannot undo! Even water can change the way they look forever. So please please please before doing anything read, watch videos, multiple if necessary as different people can have different opinions and most importantly the coins are not the same (just because cleaning one kind of bronze coins in a specific way is ok, it doesn’t mean it will be fine for all bronze coins and so on). So just be careful. As for storage, there are many good options available, just try to keep in mind that whatever you end up choosing should be acid-free and pvc-free, as normal paper and plastic have chemicals on the surface which can and will damage coins and banknotes if they stay in contact for a long time. In general, anything from well-known brands such as Lindner, Lighthouse, Guardhouse etc are a good go to, velvet-lined trays within a coin cabinet are also a nice option :) —You are welcome to check out the other listings in our store 😊Many thanks!
