Description: Harper's Weekly Original and Complete Cover: "the Wreck of the "Adonis" Full Page: The Terrible Homicide at Hawesville, Kentucky" with two prints "Murder of Lowe in His Cell in Prison" and "The Chase of Lowe by the Mob at Hawesville"* article on the Sickles trial Condition: excellent, normal aging (see pictures) *John Lowe was a prisoner in the Hancock County jail awaiting trial for a separate crime when he was murdered in his cell on September 10, 1859. According to reports at the time, Lowe was attacked and killed by three men who had broken into the jail. The perpetrators were identified as William Taylor, James Buchanan, and John Hagan, who were also involved in the Hawesville Triple Murder earlier that year. The motive for Lowe's murder is not entirely clear, but it is believed that the perpetrators may have been seeking revenge for Lowe's possible involvement in the investigation into the Hawesville Triple Murder. All three men were later convicted for Lowe's murder and were sentenced to death. The murders of the Eblen family and Lowe were two of the most high-profile crimes in Kentucky in the 19th century and continue to be subjects of historical interest and study.
