HARPER'S WEEKLY 8/1 1863 NY Riots: Burning Sacking the Colored Orphan Asylum

Description: This individual page comes from an ORIGINAL issue of Harper's Weekly. If dated 1865, it was printed in 1865, etc. You are buying JUST this page, NOT the entire issue. Because the paper in this period was heavily rag cotton in content, the page is supple, not brittle like more modern pulp papers used after 1880. The back is printed, not necessarily with text related to the image. Page size is 11x16". Two-page, single sheet ones are 22x16". Edge fraying, or small chips in margin may be present, but would be concealed by any matte used to frame it. The paper used originally had a large component of cloth so, while the image may appear browned, it is not fragile and would respond well to a professional bleaching. This is an original piece of American history, as old as the what is shown, and depicts an important event, object, person or whathaveyou. Harper's employed many important graphic artists and photographers, including Winslow Homer, Mathew Brady and others. The photographer's work was converted by an engraver into the image used in the magazine as, at the time of these publications, photography was not reproducible directly by the existing printing methods. Dimensions given, if any, are approximate. Condition as shown. Defects not visible in scan[s] are described. Item is complete as issued unless otherwise stated. NO facsimiles, copies, reprints or reproductions unless specifically stated in description above. Pictures show actual item, never a stock image.
