He is renowned for revitalizing the declining Japanese ukiyo-e printmaking art and, alongside Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) and others, establishing Shin-hanga, a new style of ukiyo-e. As a leading figure in modern landscape printmaking, he traveled extensively throughout Japan, creating numerous woodblock prints based on sketches made on location. His works, which beautifully and poetically depict the Japanese landscape, have earned him such titles as "Poet of Travel," "Traveling Printmaker," and "Hiroshige of the Showa Era." Introduced to the Western world by American art connoisseur Robert Muller, his fame has spread far beyond Japan. He is now considered one of the most celebrated printmakers alongside ukiyo-e giants like Hokusai and Hiroshige.
