Translated from the Hebrew scriptures, the true meaning of these commands are far clearer than the Catholic versions that hides our creator’s name and obscures the true meaning of the commandments. The third command is a good example. “Thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain”. The word vain comes from the Hebrew word שׁוא shawv (Strong’s H7723) and can and should be rendered RUIN. And שׁואה sho-aw' (Strong’s H7722) a closely related word would be rendered DESTROY. To hide and obscure our Creators name is to ruin or destroy it (as hiding it with Lord). Our Creator wants us to use his name. Isa 42:8 I am YHVH: that is My Name and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. The problem with generic names such as Lord or God is you really don’t know which mighty one is being spoken of. When you say God to a China-man he thinks Buddha, to an Arab he thinks Allah and to a Christian he thinks the Lord. But when you say Yehovah (YHVH) the mighty one of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the creator of the ends of the earth, you KNOW who we are talking about. When the Hebrew scriptures was translated to the Septuagint, YHVH’s name was not translated into Greek but kept in the original Paleo Hebrew script. Out of love and respect, this commandment plaque also displays the proper name of our Creator in the ancient Paleo Hebrew also known as the Tetragrammaton.
