Description: Sold as is Serious buyers with basic understandings only please for sale Daimyo grade Kabuto-wari with fine Shakudo fittings signed as: 清水行一作 Kiyomizu Yukikazu Saku ("made by Kiyomizu Yukikazu") 写楠公鉢割 Utsushi Nankou Hachiwari ("based on Hachiwari (another name for Kabuto-wari) of Nankou (an honored title name for 楠木正成Kusunoki Masashige, a famous Kamakura period Samurai general)") 兜割Kabuto-wari refers to the type of weapon that was told to be originally a larger type of inner curved styled sharpened blade used on batter field as a striking weapon. Some says it gained the name of "helmet opener" (Kabuto-wari) due to the fact that its shape produce extremely powerful and penetrating strike that can even pierce open the helmet, but in the surviving techniques found in Koryu martial art schools, it's more oftenly used as a "can opener" by hooking the gaps between armor plates by the lottle side branch on the blade body and "pry" against the opponent However, later during Edo period, it rather evolved to a type of unsharpened blade positioned more closely to a variation of 十手Jutte baton. This particular set is a typical late Edo period sample of such weapon, which is usually carried as a small side arm for self defense. Just like Jutte, it has a small side side branch to catch and "grab" the opponent's blade when necessary, but with a inner curvature on the blade body combined with a sharp tip, it produce a much more lethal strike than ordinary Jutte. Well most of the Edo period Kabuto-wari works are either low quality or relatively plainly made for use in Budo/ as pratical side arm, very occasionally, we see some of the samples are well constructed with excellent craftmanship and fine decorations with smith Mei engraved, which such pieces were carried and used by high rank Samurai, and are oftenly referred to as 大名Daimyo grade—— like this particular piece as shown in the photos, it has long Mei engraved on both side of the "blade", with large chunks of 赤銅Shakudo (a kind of copper composite of gold and copper) fittings mounted on the Tsuka handle. The Tsuba is also a seperate piece mounted on the blade body instead of a rough one-piece-consturction, with Seppa placed on the 2 sides, just like a Nihonto sword —— every aspect of this piece is showing great craftmanship far exceeds other samples you see, a museum level piece of the category.
