Description: Himalayan Tibetan Tamang Tribal Drum Bonpo Shaman Sacred Drum Dhyāngro Nepal Handmade Authentic RARE For sale is an authentic hand-crafted Himalayan Dhyāngro shaman drum. The drum is about 25 years old, dating approximately to the year 2000. It is solid, plays well, and has a rich booming sound. About the Drum (Dhyāngro) This drum is a sacred drum used by Tibetan Tamang shamans for the purpose of divining and healing through shamanic journeying. The drum is a double-headed drum, consisting of a round frame drum head made of goat skin and a carved wooden phurba dagger handle. It is played with a curvy wooden playing stick. It has 2 loops for hanging, one at the top and one on the side. Drum Head The goat skin hide of the drum head is stretched tautly over a circular wooden rim to create a double-sided drum head. It is secured to the wooden frame with rattan strips. The drum head displays empowerment symbols associated with the Hindu god, Shiva, who was originally a shaman, associated with healing sounds and mantras. These symbols are the trishul, the moon and sun, and the pinaka (bow and arrow). The trishul is a three-pronged trident, associated with the Hindu god, Lord Shiva and representing his cosmic power and authority. It is a symbol of protection, guidance, and enlightenment in Hinduism. Lord Shiva is often depicted holding a trishul. The three points of the trishul represent the triple aspects of god: creation, preservation, and destruction. Among other associations to Shiva, the moon and sun symbolize the balance of opposing energies: female and male, receptive and active, peaceful and fiery, Shakti (activated Time) and Shiva (nonactivated Eternity). The pinaka is Shiva’s celestial bow and arrow, symbolizing divine and cosmic power. Drum Handle (Phurba) The wooden drum handle is pointed, in the shape of a blade. As such, it is representative of the traditional three-sided phurba, an esoteric dagger used in Tibetan Buddhist rituals. The wood handle is a relief carving and depicts many shamanistic symbols. The carvings are in three sections that represent the upper world, the middle world, and the underworld. They encircle the handle and include the following images: Upperworld - Three faces of deities. Middle world – Weaving designs that symbolize connections and pathways and knotwork designs that symbolize the vajra, or thunderbolt scepter. Lower world - Caduceus-like symbols, symbolizing healing. Drum Stick To play the drum, one uses the traditional wooden curvy drum playing stick, which is included. When struck, the drum has a rich and resonant deep booming voice. Approx. Measurements - Drum head diameter: 14.75 inches - Drum head width: 4.5 inches - Length top to bottom: 27.5 inches - Drum with stick weighs 2 pounds, 11 ounces Dhyāngro Background Between Kathmandu and Tibet in the Middle Hills region of the Himalayas of Nepal resides the Tamang Tribe of Bonpo shamans. These are the village shaman, called jhankri. The shamans use the drum, known as a dhyāngro, for divining, exorcisms, and healing. This drum is handmade and carved in this region. The Tamang tribal shamans consider this drum to be an important ritual object. They have used this drum for centuries to go into a shamanic trance journey and channel benevolent helping spirits and deities for the purpose of divining and healing. This is a sacred drum that has been used in such rituals. The drum is also traditionally played on occasion as an instrument in Tibetan Buddhist celebrations Condition This frame drum has been well cared for, but does show some wear in places, likely from age and drying out at times. One section of the thread that circles the drum head has loosened from its notch. Also, there is a small ¼ inch split at the edge of the drum head where it meets the top of the rattan strapping on the side of the drum. Please see photos. These signs of wear do not affect the quality of the drum, its sound, or its integrity. It is solid, plays well, and has a rich booming sound. Note: This drum is being sold for its intrinsic value only.
