Shunning the popular tradition of courtesan subjects from this time on, he concentrated solely on landscape and nature works for which he had a special affinity. During this decade, he created some 5000 bird and flower studies, one of the most venerable in the hierarchy of subjects in Oriental art. Hiroshige's bird and flower prints provide a marvelous opportunity to witness the collaboration between artists and nature in the creative process. The print designer reigns supreme, but he often surrenders much of his domain on the page to the brush of the calligrapher and the sentiments of the poet. By reading the poems and learning something about the way in which they are written, the reader can participate in the creative process that combined bird, flower, poem, and handwriting in the work of art.
