Essentially, Kent's task was less that of an originator than that of a highly sensitive synthesiser, combining elements not only from the original Roman models but also from such Renaissance adaptors as Palladio and Inigo Jones. He was astonishingly successful, creating something which demonstrated its classical origins in every line but which was also individual and of its own period. The exterior is dignified - austere - but the interior superb. Unforgettable is the glowing marble entrance hall, built like a Roman basilica, with a soaring flight of steps leading to the saloon on the main floor.
