Description: Holland: The Birthplace of American Political, Civic and Religious Liberty - An Historical Essay by H.A. van Coenen Torchiana. Published in 1915 by Paul Elder & Co., San Francisco. Illustrated with tipped-in photographs. 89 pages. Measures about 5 5/8" x 9 1/2". This book was issued in connection with the Panama-Pacific International Exposition that took place in San Francisco in 1915. The author was Consul-General of the Netherlands on the Pacific Coast and Resident Commissioner-General to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. He traces the roots of American democratic institutions to Holland rather than England. An ink inscription by the purchaser (Julia B. Gill) on one of the front endpapers states: "Purchased at the San Francisco Exposition October 1915." Condition: There are some stains to the front cover. Aside from the ink inscription (which we think adds to the charm), the interior pages have no pen/pencil notations. There is occasional foxing. There is a piece torn from the fore-edge of the dedication page, which does not affect the text. The tipped-in period photographs are all present in nice condition. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
