Description: Hong Kong 1975 (Feb. 18) Erroneously Annotated Double-Registered-Airmail cover to USA franked with 10c, $1 & $5 Annigoni QEIIs (Scott # 275, 283, 283) tied by 'Hennessy Road, Hong Kong 2' postmarks with two additional strikes on reverse. Two 'Express boxed handstamps applied on front in error, crossed out and overstruck with three 'A.R.' boxed handstamps. Two red-violet 'Sumas, Washington)' arrival bkstps. 'Return Receipt / Requested' straight-line handstamp in red and four date stamps at left indicating delivery attempts over a 10-day period. Proud lists no examples of any 'Express' franked handstamp from any HK post office, but this cover demonstrates that such a marking actually existed.Hong Kong postal system introuduced an Express-Mail service on March 4, but unlike normal express-mail service where the mail matter does not receive any special treatment until it reaches the addressee’s post office, Hong Kong's fee merely guaranteed that such mail would be pla\ced on the first available departing mail plane. The fee for this was set at $3, essentially a waste of money, and therefore rarely utilized. It was replaced in March 1977 by Speedo post service, still in use today.The Express and A.R. boxed handstamps on this cover are in the same ink, both presumably applied at the Hennessy Road post office prior to dispatch from there. Although Proud lists several A.R. handstamps from several HK post offices, this example differs markedly from his Hennessy Road illustration.There is no instructional indication of airmail on this cover, suggesting along with everything mentioned above that it was handled by an inexperienced postal clerk. a RARE cover.
