Description: H.P Carlsen ( Danish, 1855-1950) Moonlit Midnight Forest. Odense asylum. Dimensions: 19 x 14 inches inclusive frame. Description: Charcoal and pencil on paper. Signed H.P Carlsen and dated 1933. Rare work completed by Carlsen while he was incarcerated at the Odense asylum. At the asylum, Carlsen was deprived of artists martials. He therefore had to invent his own materials, based on what was available within the walls. He invented his own technique where he painted scraps of paper with glue-paint which he covered in charcoal. Then he executed his drawings with scratching and rubbing using his thumb and a homemade stiff brush. His easel was a board placed over his cell bed and there he did charcoal paintings of nature from memory and fantasy. The charcoal painting is framed in its authentic frame with glass. A fine and rare work by the unfortunate Danish painter, Hans Peter Carlsen (1855-1950) A certificate of authenticity will be included with this work. H.P Carlsen (1855) Moonlit Midnight Forest. H.P Carlsen (1855-1950) Hans Peter Carlsen born in Ubberud, Denmark in 1855. Attended the Technical school of arts and the Royal Art Academy from 1876. He became friends with the artists L.A. Ring and H.A. Brendekilde at the Academy, but never finished his studies due to mental problems. Due to mental illness and alcoholism, H.P Carlsen was then institutionalized most of his life at the Odense asylum. He lived there from 1892-1949. At the asylum, Carlsen was deprived of access to easel, oil paint, canvas, turpentine and paint brushes. He therefore had to start from scratch and invent his own materials, based on what was available within the walls. He developed his original scratching and rubbing technique that he used in his series of drawings. First he painted paper or cardboard with glue-paint which he covered in charcoal from the stove at the asylum, then he executed his drawings with scratching and rubbing using his thumb and a homemade stiff brush. His easel was a board placed over the cell bed. On that bed he created charcoal paintings, the motifs of which show the nature that he was never to see again with his own eyes, but had to find in his memory. H.P Carlsen became a local celebrity and was allowed to sell his art outside the asylum. In 1936, he donated a dozen drawings to King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, which were hung at Graasten Castle. The same year he also had his first show at Gallery Wang in Copenhagen. H.P. Carlsen continued to work to the end and never left the asylum, before it was closed down in 1949. He died a year later in a nursing home in 1950. In 1992, a large memorial show with his works was arranged by the Faaborg Museum of fine arts. A book on the life and art of H.P Carlsen was published the same year. ( H.P.Carlsen (1855-1950) : En ukendt fynsk malers skaebne / H.P.Carlsen (1855-1950): An unknown Funen painter's fate.
