Description: Beautiful reproduction of a Byzantine icon known as "The Virgin and Child" in the Metamorphosis Monastery in Meteora, Greece. The original icon dates from the 16th century. The icon measures approximately 3 15/16" x 4 15/16". The age of this reproduction icon is unknown. The icon appears to have been made in Greece. The certificate on the back of the icon states that it has been “. . . produced . . . on canvas, wood and a gold background.” Estate sale find. The icon appears to be in excellent used condition with perhaps minor scratches, scrapes, abrasions, nicks, indentations, and some loss of paint and/or finish. Since the icon has been made to look old, it’s difficult to tell the difference between any actual flaws and those that may have been recreated to reflect the original icon or are inherent in the techniques and/or materials used in the production process.
