Igor Levit, who surprised music fans by releasing "Mendelssohn: Songs Without Words" online shortly after the release of his album "Fantasia" last fall, has already released a new work. This three-disc set combines Brahms' two piano concertos with a collection of piano pieces from his later years. The collaboration is with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Thielemann. Levit and Thielemann first performed together in 2015 with the Staatskapelle Dresden in Mozart's Piano Concerto. The two immediately hit it off after the brilliant performance. This is Thielemann's second recording of Brahms' piano concerto (the first was with Pollini in the 2010s). This time, as part of his Brahms project with the Vienna Philharmonic, he will be taking up these two pieces again, this time with the young master Levit. Disc 3 features Brahms' famous piano works from his later years (op. 116-119) performed solo by Levit. The album ends with a surprising twist: Thielemann and Levit perform a duet of No. 15, the most well-known of the Waltzes for Piano Four Hands, Op. 39.
