Description: Images A Pictorial History of Columbus, Georgia The Historic Columbus Foundation is proud to present Images: A Pictorial History of Columbus, Georgia as the literary zenith of its twentieth anniversary year, 1986. Founded in 1966 "to preserve sites and structures which are of historical and architectural importance to the heritage of Columbus," the Foundation has grown from its sixty-three founders to an organization with a membership of over sixteen hundred with a strong commitment to redevelopment and adaptive use of historic properties. Carved from the wilderness of west Georgia by order of the state legislature, Columbus was born in 1828. Its five original commissioners began to lay out the town in the cold winter months and its earliest settlers purchased lots and raised houses in the heat of July. A total of 157 years has elapsed since its founding, years that have seen Columbus grow from the outpost community opposite the Creek Nation to the second largest city in Georgia. Between its birth and today, the last planned city of the thirteen Original Colonies has known the tragedy of fires, wars and killer storms, as well as the joy of cheering excellent athletes, applauding famed actors and having fun at fall fairs. Images is a volume of more than five hundred quick glimpses into the crowded montage of life as it has been lived on the banks of the Chattahoochee since 1828; of the warts and dimples of human experi-ence, and of the warp and woof of a vigorous population, all the while tracing the main patterns of the economic, cultural, and industrial fabric of the community.
