The original use of incense was for the purpose of religious ceremonies. Later, incense was designed for the enjoyment and appreciation of fragrance, by infusing natural aromatics into incense resins. Then these resins were formed into various shapes for use, or rolled onto thin wooden sticks. After which, the resin or the incense stick would be burned in order to emit the fragrance of the incense into the air. Aside from providing the mere enjoyment of fragrance, incense began to be used as a means of altering and/ or enhancing the mood of a particular moment. Other rare and extremely expensive incense (Agarwood/ Aoud) were known to be used to impregnate clothing or suffuse rooms for royalty, a popular technique, presently used in the Middle-East. As far as incense sticks are concerned, there are two common types of incense sticks available: charcoal incense sticks and sawdust based sticks. Charcoal incense sticks are made by applying charcoal onto wooden sticks using a binder to stick the charcoal to the stick. The other sticks are made by applying wooden sawdust or wood particles to the sticks using a binder. The incense sticks made by applying the charcoal or wood dust are unscented incense sticks. These sticks are then dipped into fragrant oils to scent them. The incense sticks that we carry are made using charcoal. Charcoal incense sticks are cleaner burning than wooden sticks and give a more accurate scent upon burning. Charcoal sticks also create less smoke than the sawdust based sticks. Lastly, although burning times vary, each charcoal incense stick may burn up to 45 minutes.
