Description: Large lithographed map of the Niagara River, featuring old portages, battles (many from the War of 1812), communities, and commercial ventures. It seems to represent the region as it was around 1810. The map was made by Niagara Falls civil engineer W.C. Johnson for Peter A. Porter, publisher of the Niagara Falls Gazette from 1880 to 1895. Porter was He built the Arcade Building on Falls Street in which the Gazette and the United States post office were housed for many years. He owned the famous old hostelry, the Cataract House, for many years. He was president of the Cataract Bank. HE was a New York Assemblyman and very active int he Buffalo Historical Society. This item has significant tears along the folds (see photos or enquire for more details). It is otherwise intact and clean and can be taped and/or supported on a substrate. All parts are attached.
