Description: IRA MOSKOWITZ Judaica watercolor ( not lithograph or engraving) "Leaving the Synagogue" *************************** IRA MOSKOWITZ (POLISH- AMERICAN 1912-2001), Leaving the Synagogue", dated 1970, water color, 13x 16 inches, signed and dated lower left. PROVENANCE: Ira Moskowitz was born in Stryj, Galicia, Poland in 1912 and emigrated with his family to America in 1927. He studied painting and print making at the Art Students League in New York City from 1928-31. Afterwards he traveled to Paris, France and Israel, returning to New York in 1938 when he married Anna Barry. Moskowitz and his wife would often visit Taos and Santa Fe in New Mexico, and they decided to move there in 1944. After some time spent living in Paris, Moskowitz returned to New York City, where he died in 2001. His work as a whole dealt with many Jewish subjects, as well as Southwest and Regionalist themes from his time in New Mexico. Moskowitz was a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, and exhibited widely during his lifetime, including at: the Society of Independent Artists (1934); the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1941); the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois; the National Academy of Design (1946); the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh (1946); the LIbrary of Congress in Washington, D.C. (1943, 1945, 1946); the Los Angeles Museum of Art in California (1945); the Albany Institute of History and Art; the Philadelphia Print Club; the Laguna Beach Artists Assocation in California; the Springield Museum of Art in Missouri; the Houston Museum of Fine Art in Texas (solo); the San Antonio Museum of Art in Texas (solo); and the Natural History Museum in New York City (solo). Moskowitz was a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 1943.
